With the assistance of BC Nature, 14.64 hectares of Lions Bay's green belt has been added to the Canadian Protected and Conserved Areas Database. This supports Canada's 30x30 commitment to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030 in the face of the global climate and biodiversity crises.
This inclusion is also in line with Lions Bay's Bird Friendly City commitments to protect habitat in support of bird populations.
Bird Friendly Lions Bay is very appreciative of this Council initiative and hope it encourages other small communities to do the same. Lions Bay is on the Pacific Flyway, and falls within the Átl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region and English Bay, Burrard Inlet and Howe Sound Important Bird Area (IBA) which makes this inclusion even more meaningful for struggling bird populations.
Lions Bay's green belt is also an important municipal natural asset that provides slope retention, mitigates heavy rainfall and stormwater runoff, offers recreational benefits to residents and visitors, and enhances livability locally and regionally.
